Reader Challenge: February Letters

So I have this brilliant idea. (When does Jamae not have a brilliant idea?) For the rest of this year, in addition to the book reviews, I’ll be looking for challenges inspired by the books I read. Starting this month! Of course, my lovelies, y’all are highly encouraged to participate. And I’m calling it #2016ReaderChallenge. 😉

What better way to start this challenge off than with Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice (affiliate link)? Quick plug: Rosamunde Pike does such an amazing job of bringing the story to life by crafting a distinct voice for each character while maintaining a neutral tone for narration. Check out Pride & Prejudice (affiliate link), even if you only listen to the free sample. You won’t regret it! (Also, the Kindle version is only $0.99! I highly recommend you get ’em both.)

Here’s the challenge . . .

2016 Reader Challenge

After reading/listening to Pride & Prejudice, I’ve decided to challenge myself to write and send snail mail at least once each month for the rest of 2016. Yes, good ol’ fashioned handwritten correspondence. As in snail mail, complete with Forever stamps, saliva sealed envelopes, and Jelly Roll pens (90’s kids, where y’all at?).

For the first few months, I am committed to sending a group of ten friends back home (on Guam) letters with my most well crafted personal streams of endearing thought. I mean, I Whatsapp these people on a regular basis, but there are times where actual physical paper allows you to flesh out what you really mean.

For example, I have recently decided that I don’t want kids (don’t quote me on that). Although I sent a short text message mentioning this to one of my friends, I decided to write in length what circumstances have brought me to this conclusion. And with good reason, too, since I was formally known as the girl who wanted six kids. Yeah, don’t ask.

Now, if any of y’all are interested, I’m going to extend this challenge to my readers. By May, if any of my readers would like to become pen pals complete with a personally handwritten letter to be sent to their mailbox, I’m willing to commit to ten pen pals among my readers each month for the rest of 2016.

This is give and take. When I send a letter, I expect a reply in return. 😉 To start out, I’ll ask that interested readers send me a postcard to my P.O. Box with a little hello and your mailing address written as legibly as possible. And I’ll get back to you by April. I promise (and you can quote me on that).

If you, as a reader, decide to become a pen pal, I promise to adhere to the Hint of Jam privacy policy and terms & conditions. To sum up what those documents state, your information will be kept confidential, and I will not spam your mailbox. Deal?

I’m excited to see how #2016ReaderChallenge turns out. And if no one’s interested in gaining a pen pal, no hard feelings. I’ll be here writing to my Guamies.

2016 Reader Challenges encourage readers to find a challenge in a book that they've read. February's challenge is to send handwritten letters to at least one person this month. Inspired by Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice | Hint of Jam

Write Time

Are you planning to take this challenge along with me? If so, how many letters do you plan to send out each month? If not, what other challenge would you extract from Pride & Prejudice? Let me know in the comments below!
